The National Test House (NTH), operating under the administrative control of Department of Consumer Affairs within the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Government of India, stands as a premier scientific institution in the country. Established in 1912 under the Railway Board, NTH has evolved into a vital laboratory recognized for its contributions to testing, calibration, evaluation, and quality control of a diverse range of engineering materials and finished products. The institution issues test certificates for samples that adhere to national and international standards, as well as specific customer standards and specifications, ensuring the highest quality and reliability in its assessments.

NTH is deeply engaged in every facet of technology related to industry, commerce, trade, and standardization. It has been instrumental in fostering the growth of indigenous industries, acting as a crucial bridge between industrial research and the production of finished products, all while maintaining stringent quality control standards. Its efforts not only enhance the capabilities of local manufacturers but also promote innovation and excellence within the industry.

At recent, NTH offers comprehensive facilities for testing, quality evaluation, and calibration of both raw materials and finished products through its branches located in Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Ghaziabad, Jaipur, Guwahati, and Varanasi. Additionally, NTH is in the process of establishing an electric vehicle (EV) battery testing laboratory at the RRSL campus in Bengaluru. This initiative was recently marked by the foundation stone laying ceremony conducted by Shri Pralhad Joshi, Hon'ble Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, and Minister of New and Renewable Energy, on August 22, 2024.

Harmonious development of the activities of standardization, marking and quality certification of goods

To provide thrust to standardization and quality control for growth and development of industry on one hand and to meet the needs of consumers on the other.

The prime scientific and technological service what NTH provides, among other allied services, is the Testing, Calibration and Quality Evaluation of almost all types of industrial and consumer products, except drugs, arms and ammunition as per the National/ International or customer standard and specifications. The following disciplines provide in-house and on-site testing services:

       -Calibration at customer’s premises / site

       -Traceability to International system of Units (SI) as per ISO/IEC 17025:2017

Investigational work related to failure of engineering materials / products.

Welder Certification under the Indian Boilers Regulation Act of 1950 "Central Authority for Testing & Certification of Welders".

Assist manufacturing industries and sectors in creating new goods & products.

Research work undertaken for development in testing technology/ methodology.

Training programs in all disciplines as mentioned in 1.i are conducted to improve the skill levels of engineering college students, young engineers, and professionals from various government and private agencies including training on Internal Quality Audit as per ISO 17025:2017.

Actively participates and supports National Laboratory Accreditation Programme under National Accreditation Board for Testing & Calibration Laboratories (NABL).

NTH has developed fully digital based MIS portal which provides services for online submission of test request for a sample and issuance of test certificates. The NTH-MIS portal mis.nth.gov.in/ allows customers to seamlessly & digitally place service requests online with laboratories of NTH from any part of the country. It also enables customers to track the progress of their requests without the need to contact laboratory.

-Integrated Transmission Line Equipment Testing Facility at NTH Jaipur.

-Solar Cell and Panel Testing Facility at NTH Ghaziabad.

-BEE Star Rating Testing Facility.
