National Test House

National Test House (NTH) is a premier scientific organization of the Government of India functioning under the administrative control of the Department of Consumer Affairs, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution. Established in 1912 under the then Railway Board, NTH has evolved into a laboratory of national importance, serving the country for over a century with excellence in quality testing, evaluation, calibration, and standardization services.

NTH is India’s largest multi-location, multidisciplinary testing laboratory, catering to diverse sectors of industry, commerce and trade. The institution issues test certificates for samples that conform to national and international standards, as well as customer-specific standards and specifications, ensuring the highest quality and reliability in its assessments. NTH is also actively involved in supporting the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) and BIS by providing technical assistance in the accreditation and standard formation activities, respectively.

At present, NTH offers comprehensive facilities for testing, calibration, and quality evaluation of raw materials as well as finished products through its network of laboratories located at Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Ghaziabad, Jaipur, Guwahati, Varanasi and Bengaluru. With diversified capabilities, NTH is expanding into emerging and futuristic domains such as Drone Certification and Testing, Electric Vehicle (EV) Battery Testing, Organic Food Testing and other advanced technological areas.

Testing:

Testing facility of finished products & Engineering materials in various disciplines such as Chemical, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, NDT and RPPT.

Calibration:

Calibration of measuring devices to parameters such as electrical, pressure, temperature, length, volume, mass, power and hardness.

Referral Testing Laboratory:

Acts as Referral Testing laboratory for CVC (Central Vigilance Commission) samples, Vigilance samples from various State Government Department and PSUs, Department of Agriculture, Government of India, Electrical Boards, BIS, NCERT etc.

Product Development & Improvement:

Customers can utilize NTH's state-of-the-art facilities, equipment, and infrastructure to develop or enhance their products before or after submitting them for testing.

Training Provider:

To improve the skill level of young Engineers & Professional from various Government & Private agencies including training on Internal Quality Audit as per ISO 17025:2017.

Standardization of products & Accreditation of Laboratory:

Actively participates and supports BIS for Standardization of Products & NABL for Accreditation of laboratory.

Implementation of Legal Metrology (GATC) Amendment Rules, 2025:

As per the Legal Metrology (GATC) Amendment Rules, 2025 notified vide G.S.R. 779(E), and in accordance with Rule 3(18) of the amended rules, all laboratories of the National Test House (NTH) under the administrative control of the Department of Consumer Affairs are deemed to be Government Approved Test Centres (GATCs).

Consultancy Services:

Development of test methods, grading of Radiographic Images, Structural up-gradation & Failure Analysis of Industrial products.

NTH ensures a smooth and fully streamlined testing process through a completely faceless, digital system that eliminates the need for any in-person interaction between the customer and the laboratory. The system allows customers to track the status of their samples in real-time, ensuring transparency and convenience. Interaction with the customer occurs only when clarifications or additional information are required, maintaining efficiency, while minimizing delays. This approach makes the process easier for users and also ensures the service is safe, reliable and consistent.
